Why Christians Should not Listen to Worldly Music?

2 Timothy 2:3

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful and unholy.”

Many research studies proved that music greatly influences human behavior. Our emotions and decisions can be influenced by the negative words we hear in the lyrics as we listen to secular songs. If we will discern the message of most popular music artists nowadays, I am certain that we will see negativity and bad influence in the lyrics of their songs. We can also discern negativity even in the music composition of secular songs. I believe in my heart that music can greatly influence human behavior. I have my own experience regarding this fact and I have my personal observations as well.

Revelations 2:7

“Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”

I would like to share one of my experiences with the Jeepney drivers driving from Antipolo to Cubao. Whenever I commute and ride these jeepneys, I hear loud sounds of Rock and Roll and Hip Hop. I noticed some of my fellow passengers enjoying the sounds while the others are irritated by the noise of these types of music. One of the things that I had observed is the foul language from the artists while singing and most of their songs are about sex and violence. Some songs will even build up your pride against God by listening to the message of the song that is self-centered and narcissistic in nature.

Being led by God, I was able to observe the behavior of the drivers and their Jeepney conductors. I noticed the same negative behavior in their speech and actions. I noticed the carelessness of these drivers when obeying street rules for safety. I also noticed uncontrollable temper when dealing with traffic. Every time I see these things manifest, I would pray and ask God that one day these people will encounter our Lord Jesus Christ and know the truth. I know that when these people encounter the presence of God, they will have no desire to go back to their old worldly lives. Once they have tasted the awesome true joy that comes from the presence of God, they will never be the same again!

I have seen how music can stir up our emotions. And if we are constantly expose to these types of songs, we would eventually be influenced by negativity as well. We will have no control of our emotions, we can get easily irritated and the worse situation is losing our self-control influenced by anger. I am sure that we do not want to do things and then regret doing them later. That is why we should always think before we act! Being exposed to sexual songs can also weaken our spirituality and it will be harder for us to resist temptations from the enemy. Even Christians can be influenced by Satan through negative music as well. If Christians are continually exposed to these types of music, then they will soon be worldly. Time will come that their behaviors, choices and actions will be so worldly that everybody will hardly know that they are followers of Christ. If you are a Christian and you are listening to these types of songs, you better stop now or regret seeing the changes in your Christian walk later.

James 4:7

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

For spiritually deep Christians who can see into the spiritual realm, they would see negative spirits being invited to places where these negative songs are played. But for most of us who cannot see into the spiritual realm, we can know that this is true by observing demonic and negative manifestations whenever these songs can be heard. If we read the Old Testament, we will know that there are certain demonic cultures and tribes that existed and their means of worshiping their false Gods is by playing certain demonic beats and sounds. Sometimes when their demonic worship gets intense, they will be so greatly influenced by these demons to the point that they will even sacrifice their babies to their false gods.

John 16:33

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Christians should know the truth! We are given the power to influence this world and not the other way around. The Lord has overcome the wicked influence of this world by His victory on the cross! Us Christians should live in this truth and become light to this world. Let us show them the peace and the love that comes from God’s presence when we begin to sing and worship God. Let us not be ashamed to sing and worship God and through the manifestation of God’s Spirit in us, we can greatly influence many who are lost and lead them to the Lord.

Let us reject all the offers of this world including negative secular music. Let us all go deeper with worship and experience true joy, peace and security in the presence of the Lord. The Word of the God says that the Joy of the Lord is our strength and I think that many people in this world need to experience this joy. Let us exercise our authority and begin to influence the world around us. It is now time for God’s sons and daughter to reveal the power of God’s Kingdom and overtake this earth by the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I hope that by reading this post, you have known the truth in God. God’s truth will always set us free from the lies of the enemy. So again let us reject negative influences from the world and start influencing the world by the love of God through Jesus Christ our Lord Amen!
